2001 French Masters, Lacanau, France

On the slalom course European Champion Glenn Campbell got the better of World silver medallist Steve Cockeram after the New Zealander had set the pace in the first round.

Cockeram had been the only skier through the 10.75m rope length in that first round going on to round 2 buoys on the 10.25m line. Campbell had qualified in second equal place with compatriot Jodi Fisher and it was the Britons who threw down the gauntlet in the final with Fisher battling down the 10.75m line to 5.5 buoys.

Campbell knew he had to run the 10.75m pass and did just that going on to set Cockeram a total of 2 buoys on the 10.25m rope. Last off the dock the New Zealander could only round buoy 5 on the 10.75m line and so it was a British 1 & 2.

Also notable was the slalom performance of Jason Seels, whose strongest events are normally the jump and overall.

The freshly crowned US Pro Tour SkiFly Champion scored a consistent 2 buoys at 10.75m in both rounds against a field of slalom specialist. Seels used this as a basis for a 3rd place in the overall behind European Champion Oleg Deviatovsky (BLR) and World silver medallist Jaret Llewellyn (CAN).

The three Britons, who are all members of British Water Ski's Lottery funded World Class Performance squad return to the home waters of Thorpe Park, Chertsey, Surrey next Saturday for the British Open.

Jodi Fisher will be defending his British Open slalom title whilst Sarah Gatty Saunt will be competing against all the medallists from the last World Championships with Elena Milakova (RUS), Marina Mosti (ITA) and Rhoni Barton (USA) all chasing the prestigious British Open women's overall title.
