There can be nothing more frustrating for both the ski fly fans and the
organisers of the Melton SkiFly World Challenge than the world's best ski
flyers sidelined by a strong wind.
The programme at the World Challenge
was limited to wakeboard action as Freddy Kruegger, Bruce Neville and Curtis
Sheers were left as spectators as vicious wind whipped across the Melton
Reservoir, located 40 minutes to the west of Melbourne.
With water levels
dropping 3 feet overnight in the reservoir from an existing low level there
was the potential of plenty of protection offered by the surrounding banks
in the bowl setting of the excellent Melton site.
But even these banks
offered little protection to the strong winds left over from an overnight
storm that had caused damage in Melbourne.
At 2pm the event was cancelled
for the day when it was announced there would be three rounds of SkiFly on
Sunday when the 10 skiers would be challenging for $25,000 of prize money.
The winds had been building up all week and had kept the ski flyers off the
water. "It's been frustrating hanging around all week at such a great
site", said British number one and European Ski Fly record holder Jason
Seels. "It's so disappointing, not just for the skiers who stayed on after
the Melbourne Masters, but also for the organisers and sponsors who have
gone all out to put this event. Hopefully the wind will abate tomorrow and
we can get some action".
Melton also hosts the World Disabled Water Ski Championships next week where
the World
Class Performance backed British Disabled team will be in action.
