The British Water Ski squad continued to impress at the French Masters held
in Lacanau near Bordeaux, with many podium places and Jason Seels taking the
jump title.
Sarah Gatty Saunt continued her fine form in slalom this season running the
11 metre pass for the second weekend in succession to qualify in 2nd place
for the Sunday women's slalom final.
Up against home skier Geraldine Jamin
and American Nathalie Hamrick, Gatty Saunt scored 3.50 buoys on the 11.25m
line to finish in 3rd place in the final behind Jamin's 4.50 buoys.
Hamrick was the only finalist to complete the 11 metre pass in the final
posting 1.50 buoys at 10.75m to take the title.
Will Asher also continued his impressive record of running the 10.75m pass
in competition to qualify in 2nd place for the men's slalom final behind
Canadian Drew Ross.
After compatriot Glenn Campbell had set a mark of 3.50
buoys at 10.75m Asher again rounded all 6 buoys on the same rope length to
set Canadian Ross a total of 2.00 buoys on the next rope length of 10.25m.
Ross equalled this to force a run off that put both skiers back on the water
at 10.75m, a tough rope length to run straight from the start dock.
Asher
rounded 4.5 buoys falling just after the 5th buoy which meant the Canadian
could ski more conservatively later in the pass to just get back to the wake
to score the full 5 buoys to take the title. Campbell's score was enough
to place him in 3rd to ensure two British skiers were on the podium.
Asher had a great tournament also recording a new personal best in the first
round of jump of 62.5 metres and also in tricks of 7,000 points.
This put
him just ahead of another British skier, Damien Sharman who had already
posted a personal best in the overall category in the first round of the
event.
The only bad news of the weekend was the injury of team hopeful Tanya
Niebuhr who damaged her knee ligaments in a hard jump landing. Her
previous score of 45.8m had already qualified her for the final where she
had been looking forward to renewing her rivalry with compatriot Jacky
Hunter, the two have been contesting the British Record which Hunter
currently holds at 50.7m.
Hunter's 48.7m in the final pushed Marina Mosti
(ITA) and June Fladborg (DEN) all the way in a tightly contested womens's
jump final which Fladborg edged with 49.1m ahead of Mosti's 49.0m with
Hunter in third.
In men's jump Switzerland's Sebastian Di Pasqua set the early pace with a
jump of 66.7m in a consistent set. In his three jump set Seels left his
best to the last picking up plenty of speed into the ramp to gain plenty of
lift to post a distance of 67.3m.
It was then left to Australia's Ryan
Green, who had posted a new personal best of 66.4m in the 1st round to
better this but Green could not replicate his Saturday form. Last on the
water was Jesper Cassoe who again left it to the last for his best but this
was behind Seel's with 66.1m to give the 26 year old Briton the win.
