Moomba Masters 2004 - Melbourne - Sunday
Today was very cool and cloudy. What's happened to the sunny aussie weather?!
A lie in for all today, as the skiing didn't start until 2.30pm. First was the second half of the women's trick semi-finals, followed by a trick head-to-head competition, won by Nicholas LeForrestier.
After the trick head-to-head, the jump semi-finals, starting with the men. Thomas Fenzl jumped really well on his second jump, unfortunately failing to ski sway. Fifth out was Ryan Green who jumped 62m, shortly followed by Curtis Sheers, out seventh, jumping 65.3m.
Freddy Kreuger had a possible switch malfunction on his first jump, which he passed on, of his next 3 jumps, the first was the longest with 66.4m to qualify him in first position. Jaret Llewellyn skied next and although cutting earlier than the previous few skiers, jumped 66.1m. Jason Seels and Mark Lane also qualified for the final.
In the women's jump Rhoni Barton jumped first with a distance of 49.4m. Clementine Lucine next but didn't achieve the distance which proved to be necessary for the final. Angeliki Andriopoulou bettered Rhoni's jump by 20cm, scoring 49.6m.
Marina Mosti failed to score a long enough distance and had an interesting fall on her third jump. Marina fell on the cut before the cut to the ramp, after lifting a ski, it appeared that a gust of wind caught the ski, pushing her on her heels and causing her to fall and lose the handle.
June Fladborg managed enough with 49m and Emma Sheers, out last, had it all to do. On her first jump, she did enough with 48.1m but continued jumping to better her position. Emma's cut on the second jump was very late and she passed (to the relief of the crowd). On Emma's third jump, her timing was a lot better and she broke the course record of 53.7 with 54.3m, only 0.9m short of her PB.
Tomorrow is the finals day. The postponed mens slalom semi-finals are due after the trick finals, which start at 9am. Let's hope for a bit of sun!
