21 and Under World Waterski Championships 2003 - Chile - Thursday

The weather was a bit cooler today and overcast for most of the morning, but this did nothing to affect the skiing. The men's slalom preliminaries had more excitement than most finals, with 3 skiers from series 2 making it into the final.

Sam Haslam (GBR) and Chris Sumner (GBR) skied in series 3, Sam scoring 5 @ 13, with a big crash trying to get to 6, and Chris scored 4.5 @ 14. Arturo Torres-Medina (MEX) scored 1 @ 11, but this wasn't quite enough to make the final.

In series 2, Peter Klein (SAF) skied early scoring a new PB of 3 @ 11 and making it into the final. Ryan Dodd had a disappointing 1.5 @ 12. Lance Green (NZL) slid from the wakes to buoy 6 in his attempt to run 11, scoring 5 and Carlos Lamadrid-Hern (MEX) scored 2 @ 11, this was enough to mean that he later skied in a run-off.

Series 1 saw most skiers getting well into 11 and 4 skiers into 10.75. Nicholas Parsons (USA) had very close gates on his 10.75 pass, but after a judges review was awarded 2.5. Thomas Degasperi (ITA) scored 3.5 @ 10.75 putting him in the lead. Will Asher (GBR) following, skied a very easy 3 @ 10.75, choosing not to ski a better score for the preliminaries! Ty Oppenlander (USA) also scored 3 @ 10.75.

The real excitement came in the run off between Carlos Lamadrid-Hern (MEX) and Joel Daniel McClintock (CAN), who both scored 2 @ 11. Joel went out first and ran the 12m pass, followed by 2 @ 11 again. Carlos out second proceeded to do the same, causing another run off. Joel again went out and scored 2 @ 11, followed by Carlos who also ran 2 @ 11 again!!.

We could have been there all day! Carlos went first for the next attempt and at last scored something different with 2.5 @ 11. Joel then went and ran 12 again. On his 11.25m pass he rounded 2 buoys and pulled really hard to 3, managing to get past the buoy, but not managing to turn and scored 2.25. A very exciting run off, meaning that Carlos was in the final.

The afternoon event was ladies tricks, with some good performances by Clementine Lucine (FRA), Regina Jaquess (USA) and Tarah Benzel (USA).

Tomorrow is mens tricks with Jimmy Siemers (USA) and Chris Sumner (GBR) skiing. Also Ladies jump with Regina Jaquess. So, another good day of skiing to look forward to.
