The British Team took the first of the medals in the trick finals of the
2001 World Disabled Water Ski Championships in Melbourne Australia today.
Strong wind beset the Melton site all day calling for a change in the
programme.
Britain had three skiers in the trick finals and it was Debbie
Cummings, skiing in the arm category who was first on the water with two
solid stand up 20 second passes for 1260 points the gold medal and a new
world record.
Vivienne Orchard also extended the new world record she set
in the preliminary round in the leg category scoring 620 points.
Adeline
Fahey could not quite match her world record setting performance in the
preliminary round but still comfortably took the gold medal ahead of Kerri
McMurtry (USA) with a score of 820 points.
These performance extended the
British team's lead over the American and Australian teams by 1346 points.
The Americans are still within striking distance of the British team but the
pressure is on the five skiers they have in each of tomorrow's slalom and
jump finals to perform well.
This reverses the situation the British team
found themselves in for the preliminary rounds when, hit by injuries, they
went into the competition with only 6 skiers in each discipline, against the
14 strong team the Americans fielded.
